We are currently working on this section of the bookshop directory and appologise for any inconvenience.

Northumberland
Barter Books in Alnwick is a must, and you should leave plenty of time to do them justice. With the closure of Hencotes and Priestpopple Books, Hexham is now bereft of bookshops, but Hamish Dunn in Wooler is good for older books, and there are two shops in Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Tyne and Wear
The recently opened Black Flame Books is now Newcastle's only independant secondhand bookshop, but there are two run by Oxfam and one by Amnesty. Keel Row Books in North Shields ( under new management) has recieved good reviews, and there are still two shops in Whitley Bay.

County Durham
Durham itself is reduced to just an Oxfam bookshop, but by all accounts one of the better ones. John Turton in Crook is said to be worth a detour, J N Vokes in Darlington is recommend by readers of this guide, and Barnard Castle has a couple of shops.

North Yorkshire & Cleveland
York can be said to be the book capital of the north, with a cluster of good shops in Fossgate, which is a good place to start exploring the city's numerous bookshops. There are still a handful of shops in Scarborough, of which The Bar Bookstore has recived good reviews - if you can find it open! Books For All in Harrogate is now the only independant left in the town and Grove Rare Books in Shipton is well worth a visit if you're interested in older books.

East Yorkshire
I have found interesting books in The Beverley Old Bookshop in the past and there are still two other shops in the town. But apart from the hunting, fishing and shooting specialists, Countryman Books in Willerby, that's about it.

West Yorkshire
The Border Bookshop in Tomordon is recommended, and TP Children's Bookshop in Addingham is a must if children's books are your thing. The recently moved Saltaire Bookshop is worth a visit, and Venables & Bainbridge in Howarth is good for Bronte and local history.

South Yorkshire
As far as secondhand bookshops are concerned, South Yorkshire means Sheffield. Try as I may, I can only find Nick Nack Book Shack in Doncaster market, and nothing in Barnsley, or anywhere in-between for that matter. It's some years since I've visited Sheffield, but I remember Rare & Racy with affection and Tilleys Vintage Magazine Shop was always good for the iconic or ephemeral.

If you run a bookshop in North East England, just complete a simple online form and you will start to attract new customers. Trade entries in the bookshop directory are free (although we reserve the right to charge a small administration fee in the future).
