| Buckinghamshire "Ken's
Paper Collectables" in Newport Pagnell now only stocks printed ephemera and
"The
Cottage Bookshop" in Penn was used as a location "Midsomer Murders".
Otherwise, I'm afraid I have no personal knowledge of the other shops in the county. Oxfordshire Now
that's more like it, lots of bookshops. However, the city of Oxford contines to
decline as a bookselling centre, with the closure of Unsworths and the imminent
relocation of Classics Bookshop to Burford. Out of town, "Jonkers Rare Books"
offer enticements capable of emptying the deepest of pockets.
Berkshire
If it's books
on art and architecture your after then "Wyseby House Books"
in Kingsclere is the place to go. Sadly, the long established "Invicta
Bookshop" in Newbury has closed, but you can still find a selection
of their books, along with those of two other dealers in the Hungerford
Arcade.
Hampshire
Apart
from the "Petersfield Bookshop" and the "Abbey Bookshop"
(sadly now closed) in Southsea, TheBookGuide's recent experience
of the Hampshire bookshops is scant. Years ago I used to visit Southampton
and was sorry to hear about the closure of the Shirley Bookshop.
Dorset
Dorset boasts
one of the few successful multi-dealer bookshops at "Words Etcetera"
in Dorchester. Lyme Regis has recently become something of a magnet for book sellers,
while Weymouth and the Poole area remain popular. To the north the shops are more
thinly scattered but "The Antique Map and Bookshop" at Puddletown is
a must. |
