Buckinghamshire
Ken's Paper Collectables
in Newport Pagnell now only stocks printed ephemera and "The
Cottage Bookshop" in Penn was used as a location "Midsomer
Murders". Pemberley Natural History Books in Iver is a must
for natural history fans, but otherwise, I'm afraid I have no personal
knowledge of the shops in the county.
Oxfordshire
Now that's more
like it, lots of bookshops. The city of Oxford has declined as a
bookselling centre but the addition of Albion Beatnik and the rather
ominously named, Last Bookshop, gives some reason for hope. In Henley-on-Thames,
Jonkers Rare Books offers enticements capable of emptying the deepest
of pockets.
Berkshire
Sadly, the long
established Invicta Bookshop in Newbury has closed, but you can
still find a selection of their books, along with those of two other
dealers in the Hungerford Arcade, and there are some secondhand
books at The Hungerford Bookshop.
Hampshire
Apart
from the Petersfield Bookshop and the Abbey Bookshop (sadly now
closed) in Southsea, TheBookGuide's recent experience of the Hampshire
bookshops is scant. Years ago I used to visit Southampton and was
sorry to hear about the closure of the Shirley Bookshop.
Dorset
Dorset
boasts one of the few successful multi-dealer bookshops at Words
Etcetera in Dorchester. Lyme Regis still has a couple of shops,
and Bridport, Weymouth, and the Poole area are still worth visiting.
To the north the shops are more thinly scattered but The Antique
Map and Bookshop at Puddletown is a must.
