16.09.17. A rare first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone which J.K Rowling gave to a school-run mum friend is expected to sell for £40,000 at Bonhams on November 15th. The novice author signed the copy to the woman, known only as Neera, and dated it July, 27 1997 - exactly a month after its original publication. Luke Batterham, of Bonhams' book department, said: "We don't really know much about Neera other than the fact she was a parent at the same nursery. What we do know is that it's incredibly rare to find one of these first edition books in such good condition" ... more  Add a comment

While bargains are to be had at auction, for the uninitiated, I think it's worth quoting from John Carter's ABC for Book Collectors. "The novice collector does well to recognise that in a bookshop there is a strong bond of common interest across the counter, but that in the sale-room every man's hand is against him. If he is a man of spirit, he may relish the encounter; hoping to beat the professionals at their own game and be prepared to take a few knocks in the process. Yet if he is also a man of sense, he will only do so after careful reconnaissance, and then with his eyes wide open".
