London International Book Fairs Week 20th - 27th May 2012
The
London International Book Fairs Week - traditionally staged in the second week
in June - has been brought forward this year due to the Olympics.
But far from having a negative impact, it has in fact resulted in
an even richer mix of paper collectables being conveniently brought
together for one week in the capital. Visitors will have a chance
to experience the best that the British and international antiquarian
book trade has to offer, ephemera and manuscript material of every
description and price, photographs from the 19th to 21st centuries,
and postcards in profusion. If it's printed, interesting, and old
- the chances are you will find it in London this week.
We kick off
with two PBFA fairs on Sunday May 20th. The Performing
Arts Book Fair at the Royal Festival Hall will cover all aspects
of the performing arts - books, programmes, photographs, autographs,
stills etc, and includes extra exhibitors from the Ephemera Society.
The second is the one day Summer Book Fair at the Hotel Russell
in fashionable Bloomsbury. You can find some of the wealth of material
to be offered, highlighted on this fair's website.
And just a few yards away at the Holiday Inn, the London
Photograph Fair will showcase a wide range of images, with an
emphasis on vintage material.
Next
up is the Book
Fair at the Hand and Flower, which because of last years success
has been expanded to a three day event, and runs from Wednesday
23rd to Friday 25th of May. As usual this small group of dealers
who rarely exhibit in the capital, will offer a wide range of material,
in a relaxed atmosphere.
The
prestigious ABA International
Antiquarian Book Fair opens its doors for the first time at
the National Hall, Olympia, for a three day fair, starting on Thursday
May 24th. The move to the larger National Hall has been necessary
to accommodate what will be the largest fair the ABA have so far
staged, and it promises to be their best yet. A glimpse of some
of the potentially bank account emptying treasures can be found here, and there are talks, tours and a roadshow taking place during the Fair.
Friday
and Saturday see the PBFA's second fair of the week, this time at
Novotel, West London. Again, their fair website
provides full details of the exhibiting dealers a selection of the
books they will be offering, along with news and updates.
Three
fairs help round off the week on Sunday 27th: the Bloomsbury
Summer Book Fair is at the Royal National Hotel, with the Bloomsbury
Postcard Fair sharing the same venue, and the Ephemera
Society Fair, close by at the Holiday Inn. The Bloomsbury monthly
fairs have been growing in strength over the past few months, and
its summer fair should help the week go out with a bang. The Ephemera
Society's show is a major event attracting dealers from mainland
Europe and USA, who will provide up
to 70 tables overflowing with collectable paper. And dealers at
the Bloomsbury Postcard Fair will also offer every imaginable type
of ephemera alongside the postcard displays.
Previews and
highlights will be added as they become available, and links to
all these events are listed below. Add a comment
