Pirie's rare book collection to be auctioned by Sotheby's
On December 2-4 Sotheby's will be auctioning the late Robert Pirie's rare book collection. Pirie, a formidable attorney and very successful investment banker, once said, in an anecdote recounted in his New York Times obituary, that his true life's ambition was "to become the rare book curator at Harvard." Pirie amassed what is generally considered to be the finest collection of 16th and 17th century English literature, the fruits of a hobby begun in the 1950s when he was serving in the U.S. Army in Germany. Pirie's collection has been grouped by Sotheby's into 1080 different lots for sale, with prices ranging from more than $500,000 to less than $1000 ... more
