Odd that someone could go into such interesting detail regarding Driff's personality but overlook his amusing invention of acronyms (WAD, NSOC etc). "Drif went AWOL" - the only one used in the piece. - Chris K. 15.09.11.

Unless you've had a large increase in the number of shops you list, I urge you to return to the old way of displaying the information. 14.07.11. St David's was a delight -- waking up in the embrace of St Brides Bay is difficult to beat. Not much time to look for books but unlike Chris Harte, I found all the other things in the Carningli Centre more interesting than the books. Our visit to Carmarthenshire Rare Books turned out to be a few weeks too early, as Leo has just bought a house full of books but won't begin sorting them until he returns from holiday, in about three weeks time. Books On The Green in Llandeilo is attractively presented with some interesting titles, but unfortunately nothing we could squeeze a profit out of.  I'm afraid that's all we could fit in before returning to Cheltenham for an audience with Dylan Moran.  Add a comment

16.06.11. As the end of the Cheque Guarantee Scheme looms on June 30th, what will dealers and customers who can't, or won't use plastic, do? As a bookseller I accept most types of card but how will I pay at fairs and markets in the future if I don't want to carry a large wad of cash? I've been trying out PayPal Mobile on my phone but it's proving to be an uphill struggle getting sellers to accept it ... There are more comments on this subject on the Bookshops Forum  Add a comment
I buy regularly at fairs etc, and pay with a mixture of cash and cheques. Although I used to offer my card, I can't remember the last time anyone actually looked at it, or wrote the numbers down. It seems to me that most bookdealers trust other bookdealers, even when they don't know each other at all. The general public, of course, is another matter. - Richard Beaton 16.06.11.
I think you must look more trustworthy than me :) TBG 17.06.11.

13.06.11. A shop opening always feels like a good reason to raise a glass, but when it's on the remote Scottish island of Sky, one feels like making it a double. Sandy Leahy and Steve Booth, not content with running Mor Books on the island, have recently opened Mor Books & The Windrush Cafe Studio, in Straum. The quirky books and good food on offer also benefit from unrivalled views over Loch Bracadale to the Cuillin.  Add a comment

3.06.11. David Granville of Books on the Park writes: "Alan Hill has been very ill for a while and he moved out of the shop (Alan Hill Books) several months back. I believe that he and his wife are still trading online but there's definitely no 'bricks and mortar' presence in Sheffield any more. Very sad. Not many of us left now in Sheffield, though there is a new shop in Hillsborough and I've written to them to ask them to send you their information. There's also another cafe/secondhand bookshop operation in Sharrow, Sheffield, which has been around for a couple of years. If I can track down contact details I'll suggest that they also get in touch."
I'm particularly grateful to David for the above, as it demonstrates just how difficult it is to contact shops that are not listed in Yell, or indeed anywhere else on the net. If any readers can let us have contact details for either of these, or any other shops we've missed, I'd be most grateful.  Add a comment

31.05.11. Mark Hayhoe has completed his move from 163 to 167 Station Road, where the sign above the door now reads Addlestone Bookshop trading as Corfe Books. As a result of the move he has a number of bookcases and other shop fittings available for sale.  Add a comment

23.05.11. Little to report on the bookshop front from my trip to South Devon, mainly because the weather allowed us to spend most of our time walking a favourite section of the South West Coastal Path. However, I couldn’t pass Totnes without visiting Harlequin, where I was rewarded with a handful of photobooks and a Harry Clarke illustrated 1st edition. Sadly, as it was mid-week, Collards, the other bookshop in town was closed.
The only other real book shopping was in Plymouth, when a foggy and appropriately damp morning prompted a visit to the National Marine Aquarium. Both of the remaining general secondhand bookshops are nearby, with Cornerstone Books rather hidden in an Antiques Centre at the end of The Barbican. Owner Mark Treece is an old-school bookseller with books literally piled to the ceiling of his part of this old warehouse. All the books are priced to sell and we left with a bulging bagful. And almost lost in the rising tide of bars and restaurants in The Parade is The Book Cupboard, a deceptively large shop on three floors, where we rather surprisingly only managed to find one book.  Add a comment

14.05.11. I'm off to wander about in the great outdoors for most of next week, so no news or updates until Monday May 23rd. If I'm blown off course and find myself in any interesting bookshops, I'll let you know when I get back :)  Add a comment

Thanks for putting up the sketch. It reminded me that it was not far from reality. When I was head of reference services in a London public library, I got the following genuine enquiries, all in the same week:
Monday
"I can't find this week's local paper"
Me: "I expect someone else is reading it"
"Oh, in that case, can I have next week's?"
Tuesday
"Can I see the directory of people who are ex-directory?"
I spend some time trying in vain to explain the concept of "ex-directory"
Wednesday
"Have you got the directory of products that no-one makes?"
I decide to phone Personnel to ask about the possibility of early retirement. - Martin Stallion 26.04.11.

1.02.11. The Little Fleece Bookshop in Painswick finally closed in December but it must be a strong contender to win the new TBG award - Least Open Bookshop 2010.
This shop was just ten minutes up the road from me, and on a route I travelled at least once a week during its supposed opening times. Since it opened in 2005 I managed to gain entry precisely ONCE. Nominations for those bookshops you think deserve to be considered for this coveted award can be made here.  Add a comment

19.01.11. Today's Guardian newspaper carried a notice of the death of Brian Mills aged 72, on January 13th. As I reported last April, Brian had been suffering from advanced dementia and had to move into a nursing home. His funeral will be held at Stockport Crematorium on January 25th at 3.15. All enquires to Co-operative Funeralcare on 01625 525951, and donations in lieu of flowers to Dementia UK. I'm sure he and his shop will be remembered and missed by many of us.  Add a comment
I remember Brian and Anne from the wonderful The Dreamer bookshop when I was a curator at the Laing in Newcastle. I am currently researching those students who were at Newcastle in Richard Hamilton’s day and was looking forward to being back in touch and hearing Brian’s memories. - Gill Hedley 06.02.2013.

Many bookshops (including ours) directly donate surplus stock and direct customers with books to dispose of to various charities, including Oxfam. However, I don't understand your comment that: 'half the profit from giving books can go back to the books stores'. If you've given the books away, surely there is no profit? -TBG 04.01.11.
When I first read Mark Gill's suggestion I wondered if it was a festive season joke. It obviously is not. Having worked for Oxfam in the past (it being the only organisation who gave me a company car and an expense account) I feel that many people who both donate and work on a voluntary basis might care to dig a little deeper. Oxfam is a business, and a big one at that, in which a small percentage of its earnings find the right spot. I never donate books to a big business, however a church fete or a village fund-raising effort is a different thing altogether. - Chris Harte 06.01.11.
