Bookshop News - a chance to catch up on the news.

20.12.10. It's hard to believe that another year has past since I last signed-off, and that when I return on January 3rd, I will have been publishing TheBookGuide for ten years.
Over the holidays I hope to find the time to attempt some sort of review, but for now all that remains is for me to thank you all. This year has seen another big increase in the number of updates, reports, and reviews you've taken the trouble to send in. And for the first time I feel that the bookshops part of the guide is becoming what I hoped it might be, all those years ago. That's it, enjoy the festive season, and I'll see you in the New Year.
If you are looking for a little book-related light relief over the holidays, Bookworm Droppings could raise a smile, and my Shelf : Life blog might fill an idle moment.

18.12.10. Peter Shelley reports the closure of Rooke Books in Bath: "... the shop was visibly empty of books (and bookshelves). A lady working inside (packing boxes) said the shop had closed down but they were still operating online. PS Many thanks for your excellent guide which has been my trusted source of information for the last 5 years! "  Add a comment

16.11.10. I'm surprised that after being encouraged by readers to set up a bookshop forum, it's currently getting so little use. Lots of people seem to want to discuss various aspects of the book trade - so rather than just emailing me, why not post your comments here  Add a comment

We've had eight memorable years as the owners and we would like to thank all our customers and friends who've supported us during that time." I must also report the closure of Bath Book Exchange, due to the owners advanced age and health problems. The same owner had run it since 1959, and I first visited sometime in the early 1960's. So it goes.  Add a comment

05.10.10. I've now updated all the Cornish shops and added: Arcadia Books in Penzance, Benford Books in Falmouth, Churchill Books & Antiques in Truro, The Bookshop and Bodmyn Books & Bygones, both in Bodmin, and Deja-Vu Antiques & Books in Lostwithiel.  Add a comment

30.09.10. The western tip of Cornwall is a brilliant antidote to living and working in our part of the Cotswolds, which a friend routinely refers to as "The Smug Hills." And I find the brutal beauty of the Penwith peninsula enjoyable in almost any weather, but having resigned myself to an autumn holiday, it was an unexpected delight to find that the Cornish weather still thought it was summer. In fact the weather was so good that at one point I thought we might only visit Bosorne Books at The Cook Book in St Just, a few miles up the road from where we were staying ... more  Add a comment

20.09.10. 10 days outside: iPhone used only for the Met Office weather site and BBC tide times - no media, no email, no hassle. And when your closest companion for hours on end is a bottling seal it's almost possible to forget you're a bookdealer. So I'm pleased to say that I got my wish and spent very little time in bookshops … more of which when I dig myself out from under this mountain of email.  Add a comment

03.09.10. I'm about to take a belated summer holiday and will be out of the office from September 4th - 19th, so no further news or updates until September 20th. Hopefully, the weather will be clement enough to allow me to spend most of my time outdoors, but I'm sure to find myself in a bookshop or two :)  Add a comment
Enjoy visiting your French Riviera villa. I hope the staff have kept the garden tidy for you. Do remember, however, that there is a splendid English language second-hand bookshop in Antibes. It's around the port side of the market place. The gelati from the shop two doors away is superb. - Chris Harte 03.09.10.
Thanks for the tip :) TBG 03.09.10.

01.09.10. George Kelsall’s well known secondhand bookshop on Littleborough Square has been in the same location for the past thirty years ... more  Add a comment
I must add to the newspaper story to say that George's shop is absolutely superb. On first glance it does not hit home what his full holdings are on the site. Ask to be taken to the house around the back and you will find treasures in nearly every category. However, I must add that if you do go into the rabbit warren then set your watch to beep at regular intervals otherwise you might find that it is tomorrow already. - Chris Harte 02.09.10.

31.08.10. Here's a roundup of the shops readers have been kind enough to send in over the last few weeks: Biblocafe in Glasgow, St.Mary's Collectables in Chepstow, Book End in Bakewell, and Cobbles Bookshop in Somerset. And thanks to Chris K, for the wonderfully named Elvis Shakespeare in Edinburgh.  Add a comment

17.08.10. We've recently had a couple of comments about negative reviews, and a supposed concentration on "collectable books" - so it was a pleasure to receive the following from Annie Levy.
"My husband is an afficionado of second hand book shops, and with my children we find ourselves in them wherever we find ourselves. My custom is a desultory glance through the cookery section, but as someone with a very satisfying “collection” already I rarely find anything of interest. I was completely surprised today in Abergavenny at Broadleaf Books to find a fantastic section filled with classics, ethnographic cookbooks, food histories, natural and wild food, foraging— basically, so many gorgeous, interesting and well-priced books I had never seen. I could not resist buying three books, and wanted many more. I also left with a title in mind to look up on amazon, and I told the proprietor this, and she so kindly found the best on-line price for me and matched it, so I bought a fourth one. AND she was really nice to my children who were embarrassingly misbehaved.
This section is better than any cookery section I’ve ever come across in the UK, including in Hay, and including the rather large one in the Cheltenham shop across from the cinema. If you are a foodie, make sure to visit Broadleaf if you find yourself in Abergavenny.”   Add a comment

11.08.10. Sadly, Harlequin Books in Bristol is closing at the end of the month, untill then they are having a lease-end sale. However, I'm pleased to be able to add two shops in the city: Bloom and Curll in Colston Street, and The Mighty Miniature Bookspace in Cheltenham Road.  Add a comment

19.07.10. I'm surprised to discover that I can still be amazed by how bad some of the secondhand bookshops in the UK are. A couple of years ago I described the stock of one I visited as 'so dull that I could find nothing to like, let alone buy'. The owner found my remark offensive and said that my attitude would be the death of secondhand bookshops, and we would only be left with charity shops ... more  Add a comment

28.04.10. I was saddened to read today that Brian Mills is suffering from dementia, and that his partner is collecting material for a memory book. I remember Brian from his days in the Newcastle Bookshop, and his brilliant trade card which featured a gas mask wearing audience. And I still have some of the wonderfully quirky ephemera which used to be a feature of his catalogues. If you have any of these catalogues, anecotes, or photographs, please contact Bookdealer.  Add a comment
I was very sorry to read about Brian's illness. I remember well his shop at Side in Newcastle, and how when we visited him one morning, he took us in his car to his favourite lunch place, which we thought might be something special. We didn't realise at the time that we knew nothing about his tastes in food, so imagine our surprise when the lunch venue turned out to be a transport cafe! Brian was always such good company and so knowledgeable a bookseller who really understood his market. If you can, please pass our kindest regards, and this email, to Anne, who we also remember warmly. - Gordon & Gillian Hill 10.06.10.
