We are currently working on this section of the bookshop directory and appologise for any inconvenience.

Northumberland
Barter Books in Alnwick is a must, and you should leave plenty of time to do them justice. Hencotes Books in Hexham has sadly closed, but Priestpopple Books has lots of books and a great name.

Tyne and Wear
If transport related subjects are your thing, Frank Smith in Newcastle must be worth visiting. However, with the recent closure of Robert D Steedman, the only other opportunities to find books in the city are charity bookshops.

Durham
Three shops in Barnard Castle, one each in Darlington and Crook, and only Oxfam in Durham. Durham without a proper secondhand bookshop somehow seems indecent, although the recently opened Oxfan is better than nothing

North Yorkshire

East Yorkshire

West Yorkshire

South Yorkshire
As far as secondhand bookshops are concerned, South Yorkshire means Sheffield. Try as I may, I can't find anything in either Doncaster or Barnsley, or anywhere in-between for that matter. It's some years since I've visited Sheffield, but I remember Rare & Racy with affection and Tilleys Vintage Magazine Shop was always good for the iconic or ephemeral.

If you run a bookshop in North East England, just complete a simple online form and you will start to attract new customers. Trade entries in the bookshop directory are free (although we reserve the right to charge a small administration fee in the future).

"Books are the carriers of civilization. Without books, history is silent, literature dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation at a standstill."
