17.12.14. David Willis's 2015 date for his Wiveliscombe Book Sale is Saturday March 14th, however his email to me was so interesting, I've reproduced it in full.
"This is the only date available for the year, amazing how this small Community Centre has become the most booked out venue in the universe. I am so surprised that this little corner of the world generates so much interest in books. We are a small town of 2500 people and even at the moderate success of the November 2014 event we had a hand written recipe book from the 1820's that sold for megabucks. Out in the sticks are people that love books and books that are waiting to be discovered."  Add a comment

5.05.14. Laurence Batchelor on the May 3rd Market Harborough Book Fair: "So good I visited twice after going the cash machine again! Upon my first visit around 11:30 I could not get parked anywhere nearby as the on-site car park was full on this bright spring Saturday. I ended up parking nearby in one of the few residential streets without double-yellows. Upon entering the fair was very busy and there was much more stock on display than the Stratford-Upon-Avon show I visited in Feb. The stalls were well laid out, with the dealers having travelled far and wide stretching from Sheffield to the home counties. The venue was ideal (apart from lack of parking) as there was toilets and an on site cafe serving cake and hot-food & drinks. The dealers were prepared to budge on price (which is always a good thing) and many were helpful and chatty. Upon my second visit around 2.30pm things had quieted down a bit as trade was less swift. Overall a much recommended book fair indeed, as I came away with 5 titles and numerous business cards."  Add a comment

27.04.14. Whilst putting together this year's London Rare Book Week page I came across some old copies of the "Fairs" issues of the late lamented Bookdealer magazine. These were eagerly awaited for the valuable insight they gave into what was hot and who was selling it (and therefore buying it). Flicking through them brings back all sorts memories of book dealing in the 1990's - and who knows, maybe I will bore you with some of them in the future. However, two things seemed to me of more immediate interest.
Firstly, the relative popularity of different sorts of collectable material - there were fairs devoted to plate books and prints, as well as military, naval and aviation books - all subjects that have seen a marked down-turn of interest in recent years.
Secondly, the number of fairs has diminished from an all time high of 15 in 1999, to 7 this year. But perhaps most interestingly, there were some 700 exhibitors at the fairs in 1999, whereas this May there will be ... 600 - the same number as 1996.
Many things have changed in the book trade since the 1990's but the popularity of exhibiting in London seems to have remained surprisingly constant.  Add a comment

27.01.14. Laurence Batchelor writes: "Visited Stratford Upon Avon book fair today and came away with just 1 book which was in the £2 bargain section. This was the first book fair I've ever attended and I was very surprised by how little stock each dealer had on their stalls. Also the sports hall inside this school was just half full. It occurred to me why not give each dealer more space and so more stock can be brought and displayed which would perhaps equate to more sales on the day? The show was not busy as it was raining cats & dogs outside, the school cafeteria was reasonably priced e.g. £1 for a cup of tea in a proper mug. My mine gripe was their was insufficient stock to peruse. I ventured outside, but as this book fair was held on a Sunday both the town's bookshops were closed."  Add a comment
