A Crib Sheet for Bookshop Owners

We have up to 1,000 unique visitors a day to our site and most of them are looking to buy or sell all sorts of books, maps and ephemera. The news section of the Bookshop Guide is widely read and frequently commented upon – and you could be promoting your shop there for FREE by writing about it.

You could also use some of the following tips to refresh your FREE 60 word shop description. Focusing on what makes your shop special will help potential customers decide how best to spend their valuable time. Short on ideas of what to say? I’ve listed below some of the things that work for those already promoting their bookshops in this way.

  • Discount sales seem to be the most popular form of promotion - short and sweet sales seems to work best. Write about some of your more specialist stock, particularly if you have recently bought a collection of interesting material, or something particularly outstanding.
  • If you are a generalist with a fast turnover say so - some of our trade readers could very well become regular customers. Emphasise the breadth of printed material on offer, friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, ease of accessibility, parking and transport links, and any other services you may offer.
  • Suggest that visitors could ‘make a day of it’ by mentioning other local attractions and provide website links to them. Offer a discount on future purchases - even if it’s never used it creates a favourable impression.
  • And finally, encourage visitors to review your bookshop on our site, to tempt others to visit.

The best approach seems to be to mix and match the above ideas to avoid repetition and keep it fresh. And don’t forget that the 'Press Release' you produce for us could easily be turned into something of interest to your local media, making the investment of your time even more worthwhile.
